About Ring of Fire
Ring of Fire is a data-first view of Pacific Rim seismicity and volcanoes. Working title only — domain TBD. Built on public USGS and Smithsonian GVP data.
What we are (v1)
A free live earthquake map skeleton, a Holocene volcano layer, an alerts digest, education pages, and a one-year USGS catalog snapshot. Soft hooks for later paid regional watches — never deterministic quake predictions.
Data provenance
Live quakes: USGS Earthquake Hazards Program GeoJSON feeds (all_day, all_week, significant_month, M≥4.5 feeds).
Yearly snapshot: USGS FDSN event CSV exports summarized in SUMMARY.json.
Observed window: 2025-09-13T00:17:55.018000Z → 2026-09-12T23:01:48.740000Z (requested ~2025-09-13 → 2026-09-13).

Volcanoes: Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program Holocene Volcanoes WFS snapshot in data/volcanoes.json.
Coast tide gauges: NOAA CO-OPS water-level stations (type=waterlevels) via Metadata API; local snapshot data/tide_stations.json. Optional latest reading from CO-OPS datagetter on popup. Links to tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov.
DART / tsunami buoys: NDBC station table filtered for DART / tsunami / tsunameter payloads; snapshot data/dart_stations.json (browser CORS blocks the raw table). Links to ndbc.noaa.gov. After large undersea/Pacific events (e.g. M≥6.5 in the RoF/Pacific), nearby DART markers may pulse for observational context only — not a tsunami forecast. Official warnings: tsunami.gov.
Ring of Fire geographic definition
An event is classified as Ring of Fire if its epicenter falls inside the union of Pacific Rim corridor rectangles documented in SUMMARY.md. This is an auditable lat/lon belt approximation — not an official tectonic polygon set.
